BRAM DE LOOZE & DOYEON KIM
Pianist Bram De Looze delves into the contrasts and connections between Western and Korean musical traditions through his collaboration with acclaimed gayageum player DoYeon Kim. In a largely improvised performance, the piano and the traditional 12-string instrument engage in a captivating dialogue.
“At the intersection of Korean heritage and modern jazz, the gayageum and piano will converse in compelling ways, blending structured compositions with spontaneous improvisation. The focus on percussive elements and the distinctive use of space in Korean music will shape our sound. Since this tradition doesn’t revolve around harmony, it calls for a completely different approach to my role as a pianist.” – Bram De Looze
De Looze has long been drawn to Korean culture and its rich musical legacy.
“My fascination with Korean music now comes to life in a thrilling way through this collaboration with DoYeon. It’s an exceptional opportunity to explore Korean tradition through the lens of improvisation and jazz.” – Bram De Looze
DoYeon Kim, a classically trained gayageum virtuoso, has made a name for herself by seamlessly weaving the essence of Korean music with Western jazz and improvisational styles. Her collaborations with artists like Tom Rainey and Ingrid Laubrock are just a few examples of her versatility.
“DoYeon has an incredible musical depth. She has a profound understanding of Korean traditional music, yet adapts effortlessly to any jazz or improvisational setting. Her ability to connect these diverse worlds is extraordinary—something clearly reflected in her work within the vibrant New York scene.” – Bram De Looze
After collaborating for a unique concert in Brussels Jazz Festival 2025, Flagey, Bram De Looze and DoYeon Kim will continue their joint exploration of two musical cultures.
